The deer and elk migrated weeks ago to the warmer valley below. The animals that stay behind will find a cozy place under the snow to hibernate, fish will live comfortably under the ice and aspens shed their leaves. Occasionally a wind breaks the winter silence as it whistles through the tree tops. The tall pines sway back and forth, adding a soft rhythmic creaking to the gentle sounds of Winter.

This lovely meadow is on the outskirts of a community that is still blessed with lots of natural open space. It’s horse country … it’s fishing country or just simply meandering in the riparian areas on foot. At night, there are a jillion stars … and out here, a jillion is a real number.

This little piece is one of my personal favorites, and I really can’t tell you why. Every-once-in-awhile a piece of art just speaks to us … all of us. It awakens warm, happy feelings that reach out to us saying, “please take me home with you”. I should keep this one, but artists have to draw the line on collecting their own work somewhere!

When the bare branches on trees collect moisture during an exceptionally cold, damp winter night, they appear as a frosty greenish/blue mass in the early dawn. It’s a beautiful, surreal fairyland that makes the red tops of dormant bushes along the pond seem even brighter.

This delightful little pond is actually on a farmette just 10 minutes from town.
So secluded, you would never know it was there unless the landowner showed it to you.

The root system of these beautiful Aspen trees will relentlessly push into every tiny crack and crevice in the foreground rocks, eventually emerging on the surface as new trees. A few eons from now, this rock meadow will transform into a lush forest teaming with wildlife.

In late summer everything starts taking on a golden hue ... the trees, the grasses, the sunlight, even the sky seems to agree that fall is just around the corner. The temperature says it is still summer, but the colors say, not for long.

Wild horses thrive in the canyons of the remote Book Cliff mountain range area. You can see them if you go into the canyons on horseback or a have a reliable 4 x 4 and a skilled back country driver.

Some people use technical climbing gear and scale the vertical cliffs to get here, but others just drive on the road that winds along behind the rim and then mosey on down the groomed path. Both enjoy the view from the top.
The patterns created when the sky peeks through trees is always fascinating and different. It’s the sky holes … or the negative space ... that actually defines the trees.
An opening in this inviting glade was just large enough to catch the afternoon sun, allowing fall trees to show off their magnificent colors. Blocky pallet knife strokes and bright colors give this piece a contemporary feeling that will add cheer to any office or home decor.

Follow that little dirt road across the arid meadow to explore the lush riparian area and the river beyond. Sit quietly for awhile and the residents will resume their noisy lives … birds singing … little critters scurrying about … wild turkeys scrapping. You are a guest in their home now.
In this harsh world of frigid winters, scorching summers, high winds and erosion, survival is dependent on adapting and being flexible. Something like our world.

The grasses are tall and healthy … time to bring the cattle down from summer grazing lands in the high country before winter sets in.

The simple clean strokes and muted colors makes this painting fees peaceful, serene and a little melancholy. “Feel” is the keyword here. Isn’t that what most eye catching paintings are all about … capturing a mood or feeling.
