The deer and elk migrated weeks ago to the warmer valley below. The animals that stay behind will find a cozy place under the snow to hibernate, fish will live comfortably under the ice and aspens shed their leaves. Occasionally a wind breaks the winter silence as it whistles through the tree tops. The tall pines sway back and forth, adding a soft rhythmic creaking to the gentle sounds of Winter.
This lovely meadow is on the outskirts of a community that is still blessed with lots of natural open space. It’s horse country … it’s fishing country or just simply meandering in the riparian areas on foot. At night, there are a jillion stars … and out here, a jillion is a real number.
This little piece is one of my personal favorites, and I really can’t tell you why. Every-once-in-awhile a piece of art just speaks to us … all of us. It awakens warm, happy feelings that reach out to us saying, “please take me home with you”. I should keep this one, but artists have to draw the line on collecting their own work somewhere!
When the bare branches on trees collect moisture during an exceptionally cold, damp winter night, they appear as a frosty greenish/blue mass in the early dawn. It’s a beautiful, surreal fairyland that makes the red tops of dormant bushes along the pond seem even brighter. 20"x24" Oil on Panel/ Available
This delightful little pond is actually on a farmette just 10 minutes from town. So secluded, you would never know it was there unless the landowner showed it to you. 12"x16" Oil on Panel/ Available
The root system of these beautiful Aspen trees will relentlessly push into every tiny crack and crevice in the foreground rocks, eventually emerging on the surface as new trees. A few eons from now, this rock meadow will transform into a lush forest teaming with wildlife. 22"x18" Oil on Panel/ Available
An unconventional interpretation of a monolith in Monument Canyon, Colorado National Monument. Pale colors, decisive, thick spatula strokes and the slightly foggy background diminish the harshness of this stark territory.
In late summer everything starts taking on a golden hue ... the trees, the grasses, the sunlight, even the sky seems to agree that fall is just around the corner. The temperature says it is still summer, but the colors say, not for long.
Wild horses thrive in the canyons of the remote Book Cliff mountain range area. You can see them if you go into the canyons on horseback or a have a reliable 4 x 4 and a skilled back country driver. 18"x20" Oil on Panel/ Available
Lengthening shadows accent the sun’s last rays as they bathe this remote meadow in golden light. As night draws near, a stand of friendly trees offer protection to all the shy daytime residents of this high country world.
The gentle trail around this little lake is a popular morning walk for locals. In reality, the lake is not as big as it looks in the painting. It’s called ‘artistic license’. 16"x22" Oil on Panel/ Available Click HERE for purchase info. Visit https://jodyahrensartist.com to view more of my work. Bright colors combined with abstracted shapes give this painting energy and a sense of mystery. It is a contemporary interpretation of a traditional place.
On especially cold days, frost builds up on bare tree branches giving the illusion of gray foliage. It is truly a magical wonderland for a short time. As soon as the sun comes out, it melts.
Western Colorado winters are not always as cold as people think they are because of the low humidity. Tucked inside a warm snowmobile suite and snow boots, the biggest inconvenience an artist faces when painting in plein air in the wintertime is that our paint gets too rigid to work properly.
An opening in this inviting glade was just large enough to catch the afternoon sun, allowing fall trees to show off their magnificent colors. Blocky pallet knife strokes and bright colors give this piece a contemporary feeling that will add cheer to any office or home decor. 16"x22" Oil on Panel/ Available
Although rarely seen by man, big cats thrive in the fertile valleys of this red rock country. They travel favorite routes to water, hunting grounds and back to the safety of their lair. If we look closely, subtle signs of their activities can be found.
These endless free range grazing lands are home to a few remote ranches, a jillion rabbits and dramatic scenery full of contradictions. Rocks dot the soft meadows, clumps of trees offer shade from the harsh sun and giant mountains protect the valley from storms.
