This painting started out on a 16 x 24” panel. The Junipers silhouetted on top of a small, but friendly cliff seemed to cry out for a tall format. In spite of multiple adjustments during the painting process, the cliffs dominated the trees and there was no subject. But the trees were the original inspiration. One of the advantages of working on panel – it can cut it down at any stage of the painting process. Now you know why so many of the old master’s paintings are such odd sizes.

Over a period of months, I passed this scene on my way to other locations and it always caught my eye. It is so simple, serene and “Day After Day” nothing ever changed except the light and mood. I often wonder if it looked the same to early settlers of this valley … except for the fence of course.

Saddles, bridles and horse treats are kept safe from the elements in the Tack Shed. Summer grazing pastures.are close by on the hillside beyond the trees. Sitting on the back of an easy riding hose as it navigates uneven terrain is just like sitting in a rocking chair. I did say an “easy riding" horse. Some horses are like riding a jack hammer.

I was taking the long way home from Collbran, across the De Beque cut off when I spotted these trees all lined up on a hill. They looked like old men just wiling away the day, with nothing better to do than make up fishing stories and gossip about nothing.

Returning home from a painting trip with an artist friend, he stopped the car, pointing off to the left. "There's a painting I'll be you've never done ... right at the top of your driveway". I couldn't resist the challenge. It was a great lesson to see the beauty in an ordinary scene.

Such a perfect day on the Grand Mesa. Grasses gently swaying in the warm summer breeze, birds singing and a family of ravens playing in the wind currents. They actually practice precision flying acrobatics. This day mom and dad were teaching an "out of sync" offspring.

When a herd of cattle is moved up to the high country for summer grazing, the wranglers move into their summer homes as well. No electricity or running water. Cooking is done on a wood stove. They plant a garden and hunt small game for dinner … just like the old West.
